Virginia HPV Immunization Taskforce

Cancer Plan Alignment

Goal 3: Reduce HPV infections among Virginians.
Objectives: 3.1, 3.3.3, 3.1.2

The Virginia HPV Immunization Taskforce’s mission is to assemble stakeholders throughout Virginia to build a cohesive, efficient and united group of partners; reduce the risk of HPV-associated cancers with the promotion and support of education, preventive services, and evidence-based interventions; increase vaccination rates; reinforce the use and accuracy of immunization data systems, and advocate for policies that favor recommended adolescent HPV immunization.

Our Goals: The goal of the Virginia HPV Taskforce is to reduce the number of HPV-associated cancers and cervical precancerous lesions as well as non-cancer outcomes through (1) increased frequency and strength of clinician recommendations for HPV vaccine, (2) decreased missed opportunities for HPV vaccine administration, and (3) increase Virginia HPV vaccination rates with a focus on girls and boys ages 11-12.

The taskforce works on five priority areas:

  1. Providers – Strengthen HPV vaccination recommendations and decrease missed opportunities.
  2. Parents – Educate and raise awareness about the importance of vaccinating males and females ages 11-12 to prevent cancers and to increase acceptance of vaccination against HPV infection.
  3. Systems – Address barriers such as the inadequate reimbursement for vaccine administration and the lack of reminder/recall systems.
  4. Policies – Maximize access to and opportunities for vaccination (e.g., by considering alternative settings such as pharmacies). Health
  5. Disparities – For underserved populations at highest risk for cervical and other HPV-associated cancers, address barriers including cultural factors, distrust of the medical system, and limited access to health care.

Members of the taskforce collaborate to increase the awareness, accessibility, education, engagement, and resources required to increase the number of adolescents vaccinated with the HPV vaccine.
